Americas Crime Problem: A National Emergency
In the last few years, crime in the United States has emerged as a pressing issue that demands immediate attention. From rising violent crime rates in urban centres to a surge in property crimes, the landscape of crime has shifted completely.
According to the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program, the overall crime in rate in the United States had a massive increase in the past 10 years. While property crime rates had been declining for decades, the pandemic was a crisis. Cities across the nation reported increases in homisides, aggravated assaults and other violent crimes.
The rise in crime can be attributed to multiple factors such as social unrest, economic instability, and the impact of COVID-19. For example, according to Rhett Morris, "In 2020, the United States experienced a surge in its homiside rate of almost 30%, the fastest spike ever recorded in the country". This was insane. This caused nobody to leave their houses even when they were aloud. As many Americans faced job losses, and financial hardships, this desperation caused some to commit these crimes.
Another main reason to rising crime in the United States is gun violence. The availability of firearms, combined with tax gun control laws in some states, has led to a surge in gun related crimes. According to Gun Violence Archive, the number of mass shootings and gun related fatalities has reached alarming levels, prompting discussions about the need for stricter gun regulations.
