Your server isn't lazy, they're just underpaid.
More often than not, you would be disgusted with what goes on behind the counter of your favorite fast-food restaurant. Fast food workers are essential today because without them, you wouldn't be able to grab a quick bite to eat before work or get a snack with your friends. Fast food workers are being treated as "less than" and people who don't really matter. They are not being paid enough to care about the food on the ground or rats running around on the floors. The employees are also most certainly not getting paid enough to deal with the abuse and harassment that comes with working in the food industry.
This is the harsh reality that these workers face daily. These workers deal with abuse every day from customers, other staff members, and managers. A fan favorite fast-food restaurant is McDonald's, known for its fast service and decent food. McDonald's also has some of the worst claims of harassment, and the kitchen is just disgusting. A 19-year-old worker, Matt, told the BBC that some of his colleagues were afraid to go into work, and that the managers would "touch up" the other staff members. Another worker quit after she was touched inappropriately and harassed. A worker from a different branch at McDonald's said a shift manager asked her for sex in return for extra shifts; she was 17, he was 30. The sexual abuse and comments have gotten out of hand, and without the proper training and support from managers and other employees, it is only going to get worse.
It is no secret that the restaurant industry is in a crisis, and signs show it is declining even more. Business Insider ran a survey, and the results found that around 58% of restaurant and hotel employees plan to quit their jobs at the end of the year. This could destroy the industry, and it adds to the record number of employees who have been quitting throughout the year. More people were saying that they would consider returning to their jobs if the right working conditions were met and if the companies would attempt to make a change in their work environments.
Some business owners are saying that it's impossible to find people to work, and that there is a lack of desire to work. It is not that there is a lack of people who will work; it is simply the fact that they are treated so poorly with little to no respect. No one is willing to go through all the verbal and sexual abuse for 8 dollars an hour. Dining rooms are closing, and restaurants are cutting back their hours because the lack of servers and cooks. That should really say something about how they are running their business if they can't find anyone willing to work there.
While many people argue that fast-food workers should be paid more, others disagree with that and say they don't need to be paid more. Many people have decided that people in these roles are not valued and are considered "less than" those in higher positions. I believe that these jobs are just as important as any other jobs. If we didn't have people to work the restaurants and grocery stores, we wouldn't have any way to get those things anymore. People decide that anyone in a lower position than them is automatically worth less than them and deserves to be treated as so.
No one deserves to be treated poorly just because of their position at a workplace. You never know what they could have gone through to get to that place in their lives. Fast food workers should be paid more and treated better than they are used to dealing with.
