Homelessness, Hunger, and Hubris: How Politicians keep people struggling To understand homelessness in America, you need to follow the money, and the zoning laws. For decades, the nation has failed to build enough affordable housing to keep up with demand. The combination of exclusionary zoning and financial speculation has turned housing from a necessity into a commodity for profit. The result? A rental market that is increasingly hostile to anyone not backed by ridiculous wealth. Across metropolitan areas, median rent has risen dramatically while wages have stagnated, and even people working multiple jobs often can’t afford a one-bedroom apartment without sacrificing food, healthcare, or childcare. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of affordable units have been demolished, converted into luxury condos, or snapped up by investment firms searching for high returns rather than stable communities.  Housing advocates have repeatedly pointed out that the majority of people experienci...

SIOG  Older people are an increasingly significant part of the workforce, driven by a growing population of older adults and their desire to continue working for financial, social, and psychological benefits. Many adults have to continue to work for different reasons. Sometimes it due to financial reasons and sometimes it's  because one may want to work. Either way it's not fair to discriminate against older people. Nelson and Scharlach  explain that a growing amount of research indicates that negative perceptions of older adults have increased over time. This can hold many challenges for Boomers such as their mental health, physical heal...

Your server isn't lazy, they're just underpaid.

Mirror.co     More often than not, you would be disgusted with what goes on behind the counter of your favorite fast-food restaurant. Fast food workers are essential today because without them, you wouldn't be able to grab a quick bite to eat before work or get a snack with your friends. Fast food workers are being treated as "less than" and people who don't really matter. They are not being paid enough to care about the food on the ground or rats running around on the floors. The employees are also most certainly not getting paid enough to deal with the abuse and harassment that comes with working in the food industry.      This is the harsh reality that these workers face daily. These workers deal with abuse every day from customers, other staff members, and managers. A fan favorite fast-food restaurant is McDonald's, known for its fast service and decent food. McDonald's also has some of the worst claims of harassment, and the kitchen is just disgustin...

The Hard Truth: Millions of Disabled Americans Still Struggle with Basic Accessibility

Image
The Hard Truth: Millions of Disabled Americans Still Struggle with Basic Accessibility Shutterstock Many disabled Americans are being discriminated against every day. The government is doing nothing about this issue. Things need to change. The equality and inclusion of those in wheelchairs should be prioritized when designing public buildings. Disabled people still have the same rights and feelings as those who are abled. Public buildings are for everyone, and no one should be discouraged from going anywhere they please. The layout and architecture of every public building should be thought over carefully before any construction takes place so it will accommodate everyone, abled and disabled people. One might say, there are numerous disabilities among the American population, so why should the government focus on only one? All disabilities that need structural accommodations should be thought about equally. The author, Catherine A. Okoro , states, “Mobility was the most prevalent disab...

iStock Images                                         Hazing and bullying have become an alarming threat in America's schools and athletic programs, leaving students and players mentally shaken and physically injured. These behaviors will not "toughen kids up" but rather destroy confidence, team culture and leave scars that can follow victims for years. This growing "tradition" doesn't have to remain a problem. With stronger oversight, tougher enforcement and stricter anti hazing policies, we can give educators and coaches the tools they need to protect young lives.         According to Leo Lim, in a US...

Injustice in Service Work

Image
oxfamamerica.org It is common to see mistreatment of service industry workers daily. This raises a common question: why do people continue to undervalue service industry jobs? Human decency should be a consistent standard that people try to uphold, especially in public spaces where others are trying to enjoy themselves or just get through the day. People should feel safe in the environment they are in, especially in the workplace. It is essential to educate people about the importance of respecting other professions and their work. What once was an occasional rudeness has now become a common problem found today.  The common mistreatment of service workers is unacceptable. Continuous behaviors of customers when they go out to eat are prevalent and continue to be reported....

Your Children Are Not Safe from Workplace Harassment Newsport Academy Your teen children have probably started working, saving up for college, and going out to do fun things with friends. You feel secure knowing your child is taking up some financial responsibility and learning a work ethic, but how secure do you feel knowing your child is subject to creeps and people who will stop at nothing to be right? How can you protect your children from the kind of people who want to hurt them when you're not around? Sending your kid to work is a great experience for them and their growth into adulthood. “The workplace promises to be a target-rich environment for socializing with other adolescents and young adults .”Your kid is socializing with other individuals their age and older, learning financial responsibility, and how to work with people. However, your teens are still young and impressionable, and not everyone there will have their best interests at heart. And your teen might not see ...

The Invisible Effects of Bullying

Every administrator everywhere has said it. "We do everything we can." But families know better. What exists behind an ideal mission statement, anti-bullying posters and channels of communication that get buried after the first report of an incident is a longstanding and rampant occurrence , continuously framed as “kids being kids ”, that ruins lives. All it takes are a few whispers in a locker, a dozen more comments online, and an embarrassing incident or two to compile in a lifetime to yield fatal consequences.   With increasingly reliable access to substantiated findings, what families have known for years is proven. Bullying is unhealthy, it's not a phase and it's certainly not something children are meant to experience to build character. Victims are more vulnerable to adverse health consequences. “Among many different factors affecting young people's mental health, exposure to bullying and its dynamic is one risk factor” ( Hästbacka et al., 2025).   ...
